Issued just months after Diana's death in August 1997, this coin reflects the wave of memorial currency that swept through smaller mints and issuing authorities worldwide — Bosnia among the most incongruous, given Diana had no formal connection to the country beyond her 1997 visit to Sarajevo to campaign against landmines. That visit, less than two months before she died, gave the issue at least a defensible rationale.
The copper-nickel composition mirrors the circulating coinage of the period rather than a collector-grade silver strike, suggesting this was aimed squarely at the memorial novelty market.
