Schleiz issued this porcelain notgeld in 1922 as Germany's postwar inflation made metal coinage economically unviable — the raw material cost of a metal coin routinely exceeded its face value. The Meissen and Volkstedt porcelain works in Thuringia supplied blanks to numerous municipalities during this period, making the region a natural center for ceramic emergency currency. Brown-glazed pieces from Schleiz are among the less commonly encountered color variants in this denomination.
