The full civic arms of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg occupy the central field, depicting a crenellated white castle with three towers on a red shield, surmounted by an open helmet bearing a tall crown of ostrich feathers. Two rampant lions serve as heraldic supporters on either side of the shield, which rests upon foliate mantling at the base. The circumferential legend FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG runs along the upper rim, flanked by a beaded border. The mint mark J appears in the lower field beneath the arms, denoting the Hamburg Mint. |

The reverse presents a bold, centrally positioned denomination in large stylised script characters: the numeral '5' to the left and an ornate Gothic 'M' (for Mark) to the right, rendered in an elegant calligraphic Kurrent-influenced style that fills much of the field. Below the denomination, the date 1922 is inscribed in Roman numerals across the lower centre of the field. The design is austere and uncluttered, with no border legend, relying entirely on the typographic quality of the lettering for its visual impact. |
