Otto I of Bavaria reigned for 27 years without ever once exercising royal authority. Declared legally insane in 1872 and confined at Fürstenried Palace, he was placed on the throne in 1886 following the drowning death of Ludwig II — purely as a constitutional formality, with his uncle Luitpold governing as Prince Regent throughout. Every coin struck in Otto's name was issued by a man he likely never knew was ruling in his place.
The regency arrangement ended in 1913 when Luitpold's son Ludwig had Otto formally deposed by act of the Bavarian parliament, ending this series.
