Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse facing right, with a full beard and naturalistically rendered hair, the truncation clearly visible at the base of the neck. The mint mark H appears in the lower field below the portrait. A continuous beaded border frames the design, with the circumferential Latin legend reading LUDWIG IV GROSSHERZOG VON HESSEN.

Reverse description The crowned Imperial German eagle displayed at center, with spread wings and detailed feathering, bearing on its breast an escutcheon charged with the Prussian eagle. The date 1877 appears to the right of the eagle within the circular legend, and the denomination 5 MARK is inscribed in the lower field, flanked by six-pointed stars. A beaded border surrounds the entire design, with the legend DEUTSCHES REICH arcing across the upper field.
