Lechfeld was a Bavarian military airfield and training facility pressed into service as a prisoner of war camp early in the First World War. Like most German PoW camps of the period, Lechfeld issued its own internal scrip to prevent hard currency from circulating among prisoners — a practical containment measure adopted across dozens of camps simultaneously from 1914 onward. The notes were not redeemable outside the wire.
J. P. Himmer of Augsburg, a regional commercial printer with no particular specialization in security printing, produced these under straightforward contract. The green paper stock was a common differentiator used to distinguish camp denominations from one another rather than any anti-counterfeiting measure.
