Issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Heinrich Hertz's birth, this coin appeared at a moment when the GDR was aggressively claiming German scientific heritage as ideological capital — Hertz, whose electromagnetic wave experiments in Karlsruhe during the 1880s underpinned nearly all modern wireless communication, was a convenient figure for a state that otherwise struggled to project technological prestige.
