Commemorative notgeld issued to mark the assignment of Knurów to Poland, dated Knurów, den 3. Mai 1922. Knurów was a small industrial township in Upper Silesia, and like hundreds of other municipalities in the region, it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — to address the chronic small-change shortage that plagued Germany in the early 1920s. The 1921–22 wave of municipal issues was driven by hyperinflationary pressure stripping coins from circulation almost as fast as they were minted.
The 5 Mark denomination places this note at an awkward moment: by late 1922, 5 Mark was already losing practical value rapidly, and most municipal Notgeld of this type had a very short window of legitimate use before being rendered worthless by the collapsing reichsmark.
