Opmerkingen

Frankfurter Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft vormals Pokorny & Wittekind was an industrial machinery manufacturer based in Frankfurt am Main, and this 5 Mark note belongs to the vast category of German Notgeld — emergency scrip issued by private firms, municipalities, and institutions during the acute coin shortage of the First World War. By 1918, the German Reichsbank had effectively lost control of small-denomination circulation, forcing thousands of employers to pay workers in self-issued paper.

Factory-issued Notgeld of this type was redeemable only at the issuing company, which kept redemption risk firmly local.
