Reverse description The reverse features two iconic military attributes of the Prussian hussar officer Ferdinand von Schill: a hussar-style shako with its characteristic decorative cord and chin-strap fitting is depicted in the upper central field, while a curved hussar sabre with a knuckle-bow hilt is shown horizontally across the middle of the field. The birth and death years 1776 and 1809 are inscribed to the left and right of the shako respectively. The legend FERDINAND VON SCHILL occupies the lower portion of the field in three lines of bold capital lettering.

Additional information

Ferdinand von Schill led an unauthorized 1809 cavalry raid deep into Napoleonic-occupied Germany, gambling that his advance would spark a popular uprising. It didn't. He was killed in street fighting in Stralsund, and eleven of his captured officers were shot by French firing squad in Wesel. The East German state found him a useful figure — a Prussian officer who defied established authority in the name of national liberation was ideologically convenient framing, even if the historical reality was considerably more complicated.
