This piece is a pattern struck in aluminium, a metal that enjoyed a brief window of serious monetary consideration in the 1890s before its price collapsed following the Hall-Héroult electrolytic smelting process made mass production trivial. The dual-portrait design commemorates the silver wedding anniversary of King Charles I and Queen Olga alongside Wilhelm II's visit to Stuttgart — an unusual diplomatic occasion that prompted Württemberg to explore a commemorative coinage that was ultimately never authorized for circulation.
