Erfurt's municipal authority issued this note under the emergency currency provisions that proliferated across German cities and towns in the final year of the First World War. The Magistrat der Stadt Erfurt was among hundreds of local bodies forced to fill the void left by hoarded coins and strained central bank supplies — Notgeld in the truest sense, born of necessity rather than civic pride.

The Erfurter Druckerei und Plakatzentrale was a commercial printing and poster house, not a security printer. That origin shows in how these notes age.
