Kitzingen's 5 Mark Notgeld of 1918 belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency — issued before Germany's defeat was official, when the central supply of small-denomination coins had dried up almost completely due to wartime hoarding and metal requisitioning. Towns like Kitzingen were effectively left to fend for themselves, and Carl Gerber in Munich handled a significant volume of such commissions from Bavarian municipalities that year.
Gerber was a competent commercial printer rather than a security specialist, which shows in the relatively modest anti-counterfeiting measures on notes of this type.
