5 Mark 20 Years of GDR - Nickel-bronze

Issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of the GDR's founding on 7 October 1949, this coin appeared at a moment when the East German state was projecting institutional confidence while simultaneously tightening restrictions following the 1968 Prague Spring. The SED leadership used commemorative coinage aggressively throughout this period as a domestic legitimacy tool — the anniversary series was part of a broader propaganda calendar, not an incidental release.

The nickel-brass composition was characteristic of GDR commemorative fives from this decade, chosen partly for cost and partly to distinguish circulation commemoratives from the cupro-nickel business strikes.
