The denomination "Fünf Mark" occupies the centre field in large ornate calligraphic script with elaborate flourishes. A large heraldic lion passant vignette in red-orange, representing the arms of Passau, dominates the centre-right field behind the denomination. The title "Kriegs-Notgeld-Schein / der Stadt Passau" appears in Gothic script at the top, with "5 Mark" in bold Fraktur below. A three-line redemption notice in German is printed at the foot of the note.
