Holzminden's 5 Mark notgeld from 1921 falls squarely within the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — issued not because of wartime disruption but because the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough small-denomination notes to keep local commerce moving during the inflationary spiral that followed Versailles. Gebrüder Jänecke were a well-established Hannover printing house with deep roots in commercial lithography, and their notgeld output for Lower Saxon municipalities during this period was substantial.
The single signatory "Jeep" almost certainly represents a municipal treasurer or Bürgermeister's deputy, though the name appears without title across the series.
