Holzminden is a small town on the Weser in Lower Saxony, and its 1921 emergency issue belongs to the vast wave of German Notgeld produced as postwar inflation outpaced the Reichsbank's ability to supply adequate small-denomination coinage. Municipalities, firms, and savings banks across Germany issued their own notes with little central oversight — Holzminden was one of thousands.
Gebrüder Jänecke of Hannover were among the more active regional printers serving this market, handling runs for numerous Niedersachsen municipalities during the same period. The note's survival rate is generally high across this series; overproduction for the collector trade was already common by 1921.
