Oelde is a small Westphalian town, and its 1921 notgeld emission falls squarely within the municipal paper money wave that swept German local authorities during the hyperinflationary spiral following WWI. The Reichsbank's inability to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation — metals were hoarded or exported — forced thousands of municipalities to print their own. Oelde was one of hundreds doing exactly this, with no particular distinction in the broader notgeld record.
The 5 Mark denomination places this note in a transitional moment: by mid-1921, inflation was accelerating fast enough that even recently printed municipal issues were losing purchasing power within weeks of release.
