Beschrijving voorzijde Blue-grey letterpress note with a decorative scroll border enclosing the main text panel; bold Gothic-script 'GUTSCHEIN' heads the design, flanked by '5' numerals at each corner, with the issuing authority 'DER STADT MÜHLHAUSEN I/TH.' arched below. A faint underprint vignette of portrait figures occupies the central field behind the denomination inscription 'FÜNF MARK', while the date 'Mühlhausen i/Th., den 31 Okt. 1918' and 'DER MAGISTRAT' appear above two facsimile manuscript signatures. A redemption clause in small type runs along the lower margin, and a tall right-hand panel carries a large white numeral '5' against a lightly ornamented ground.

Opmerkingen

Mühlhausen in Thüringen — the town where Thomas Müntzer led the 1525 peasants' revolt — issued this Notgeld during the final year of the war, when the metal coinage shortage had become acute enough to push municipalities into emergency paper issue. The Magistrat's authorization placed the burden of redemption on the town treasury, a guarantee that looked increasingly fragile as Germany moved toward armistice and economic collapse.

Ohlenroth of Erfurt handled a significant volume of Thuringian municipal Notgeld, and their workmanship on the 5 Mark denominations tends to be more substantial than on the smaller pfennig series — heavier paper, tighter register.
