| Beschrijving keerzijde | Printed in dark blue on cream paper, the reverse carries a panoramic vignette of the Altenburg cityscape with the Stiftskirche and Schloss dominating the skyline, rendered in fine line engraving across the centre of the note. A large ochre-yellow underprint numeral '5' overlies the vignette. Above the vignette, a text panel in Fraktur script states the conditions of validity and demonetisation procedure; below, a further panel contains the counterfeiting penalty clause. The serial number, comprising a letter prefix and numerals in red, appears at the upper left, and the denomination '5 M.' is repeated in two framed cartouches at the lower corners. The printer's imprint appears at the foot: 'gedruckt bei Schneider & Co. Altenburg S.A.' |

Altenburg's municipal treasury — the Kämmereikasse — issued this note in 1918 under the emergency currency provisions that allowed German towns and cities to print their own Notgeld as the imperial monetary system buckled under wartime strain. Schneider & Co. was a local Altenburg printer, not a specialist security press, which makes the inclusion of a watermark notable — many comparable municipal issues from the same period dispensed with such features entirely.
Saxe-Altenburg ceased to exist as a sovereign duchy less than a year after this note was printed, abolished in November 1918 when Duke Ernst II abdicated.
