Zittau sits hard against the corners of Germany, Bohemia, and Silesia — a textile town that by late 1918 was watching its economy fragment alongside the empire it had served. This note is Notgeld in the proper sense: issued by the district authority (Amtshauptmannschaft) jointly with the town administration because Reichsbank notes had effectively vanished from daily commerce, hoarded or redirected to war procurement.
Gebrüder Güttler was a local Zittau printer, not a specialist banknote firm. That matters — the security features are minimal, and contemporary counterfeiting of small-denomination Notgeld was common enough that many issues were quickly withdrawn and redesigned.
