| Obverse description | At center, the national coat of arms of Azerbaijan is depicted within a circular frame, featuring an eight-pointed star with a flame motif and wreath at its base. To the left, a large crescent and geometric ornamental motifs occupy the field in a stylized composition. The legend 'AZƏRBAYCAN RESPUBLİKASI' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '5 MANAT' appears in the lower exergue. Small star ornaments flank the denomination at either side. |

TANAP — the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline — was formally agreed between Azerbaijan and Turkey in 2012, with construction beginning in 2015. The pipeline was designed to carry Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz II field across Turkey toward Europe, a project with obvious strategic implications for both Ankara and Brussels as each sought to diversify away from Russian supply. This coin was issued the year active construction was underway, before the line's completion in 2018.
