Azerbaijan's National Olympic Committee was founded in 1992, immediately following independence from the Soviet Union, and received IOC recognition the same year — one of the faster accessions among the post-Soviet republics. This coin was issued ahead of the Baku hosting ambitions that have defined much of the country's international sports diplomacy since the 2015 European Games.
