Issued to mark the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, held in Ashgabat in September 2017 — the first time Turkmenistan hosted a major multi-sport event of that scale. The government treated the games as a prestige project on an extraordinary scale, constructing an entirely new Olympic village complex outside the capital at reported cost exceeding five billion dollars. A commemorative banknote was an almost inevitable piece of that promotional machinery.
De La Rue's involvement is unsurprising; they have handled Turkmenistan's currency printing since the manat's redenomination in 2009.
