Ağdam, once a city of roughly 40,000 people in southwestern Azerbaijan, was abandoned following Armenian forces' capture in 1993 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War and left largely razed — earning comparisons to Hiroshima in regional press. It remained a ghost city for nearly three decades. This coin was issued in 2021, the same year Azerbaijan formally reasserted control over the district following the 2020 Forty-Four Days' War, making the series explicitly commemorative of territorial reclamation rather than cultural heritage in the conventional sense.
