The 5 Makuta denomination was introduced as part of the broader currency reform following Congo's transition to the mobutu-era monetary system, in which the Congo Franc was replaced by the Zaïre and its subunit the Likuta (plural Makuta) in 1967. Mobutu's government used the new currency architecture as a tool of political distancing from the colonial Belgian franc system — the Zaïre and its subdivisions were among the earliest visible markers of his authenticité campaign.
