Lithuania's Endangered Wildlife series was launched in the late 1990s as the newly independent nation rebuilt its monetary institutions and began participating in the international commemorative coin market. The barn owl (Tyto alba) had suffered sharp population declines across Lithuania through the Soviet period, largely due to agricultural collectivization that destroyed traditional nesting sites in old farmsteads and granaries.
