Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union in March 1990, but the ruble remained in circulation while the new government scrambled to establish monetary infrastructure. The litas, last used before Soviet annexation in 1940, was reintroduced in stages — this 1991 issue predates full monetary transition by two years, placing it in the unstable window when Lithuanian-issued coinage circulated alongside Soviet currency.
KM#93 is among the first coins struck for the restored republic, produced before Lithuania secured its own dedicated mint contracts.
