Obverse description The national coat of arms of Lesotho occupies the central field, featuring two rearing horses as supporters flanking a shield upon which a crocodile — dynastic emblem of the Seeiso royal house — is depicted. A mountain silhouette surmounts the composition, alluding to Lesotho's highland geography. The three-word national motto in Sesotho, KHOTSO PULA NALA (Peace, Rain, Prosperity), appears below the shield. The peripheral legend KINGDOM OF LESOTHO arcs above, with the date 1994 positioned at the base, all within a beaded border.

Additional information

Lesotho's 1994 coinage series was issued shortly after Letsie III's contested ascension to the throne — his father Moshoeshoe II had been deposed by the military government in 1990, and Letsie himself would briefly abdicate in 1995 to allow his father's restoration, only to resume the throne again following Moshoeshoe II's death in 1996. Coins bearing his effigy from this particular year sit in the middle of that dynastic instability.
