Issued to mark fifteen years of Israeli statehood, this coin belongs to the early run of commemorative silver that the Bank of Israel used partly as a foreign currency earner — collectible exports sold to diaspora communities and international numismatic markets as much as domestic circulation pieces. The seafaring theme was deliberate policy: the young state had been aggressively developing its merchant fleet and the Zim shipping company throughout the 1950s, and the anniversary series consistently chose subjects that projected economic ambition rather than military history.
