The University of Malta traces its founding to 1592, making it one of the oldest universities in the Commonwealth — predating the establishment of Harvard by over four decades. This 1993 issue was struck to mark the institution's 400th anniversary, a milestone that coincided with a period of significant expansion in Maltese higher education following the country's independence and its growing ambitions as a Mediterranean hub for international students.

Struck to the .925 fineness standard common to British Commonwealth commemorative issues of the period, with the 28.28g specification shared across dozens of contemporary Crown-sized commemoratives — a cost-efficient format adopted by the Royal Mint and its contract partners throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
