Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of UNICEF, this coin was part of a coordinated global commemorative program in which dozens of countries released silver pieces simultaneously in 1996–1997 — many sharing near-identical specifications. Malta's participation reflected the island nation's established relationship with international humanitarian bodies, having joined the UN in 1964 shortly after independence. The 5 Liri denomination was Malta's standard vehicle for silver commemoratives throughout the 1990s before the eventual transition toward euro adoption planning began reshaping monetary policy.
