| Reverse description | A young boy seated in the field cradles a cat in his arms, rendered in high relief with careful sculptural detail. To the left stands a desktop personal computer with monitor, tower unit, and keyboard, symbolising modern childhood and access to technology. The UNICEF emblem, depicting a mother and child within a laurel wreath, appears to the lower right of the central design. The Maltese legend GĦAT-TFAL TAD-DINJA arcs along the upper periphery, and the denomination Lm5 is inscribed in the lower field. |

Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of UNICEF, this coin was part of a coordinated global commemorative program in which dozens of countries released silver pieces simultaneously in 1996–1997 — many sharing near-identical specifications. Malta's participation reflected the island nation's established relationship with international humanitarian bodies, having joined the UN in 1964 shortly after independence. The 5 Liri denomination was Malta's standard vehicle for silver commemoratives throughout the 1990s before the eventual transition toward euro adoption planning began reshaping monetary policy.
