Trial strikes — "prove di stampa" — from the Rome Mint in this period were produced in strictly limited numbers for internal approval and submission to the royal household, not for public distribution. The 1926 5 Lire denomination was part of Italy's broader currency stabilization program under Mussolini, who in 1927 would fix the lira at "Quota 90" against sterling — a revaluation that shaped the entire coinage program these trials fed into.
Pagani 228 is among the scarcer trial listings for this reign. Survivors outside institutional collections are rarely documented.
