San Marino's annual collector coinage program, running continuously since 1972, produces themed sets each year across multiple denominations — 1988's set depicted historic towers of the republic. The Torrione del Macello, a medieval fortification in the city of San Marino, lent its name to this piece. Aluminium 5 Lire denominations from this program saw virtually no commercial circulation; they were issued directly into collector sets and rarely handled outside of that packaging.
