The shield's design reflects Pacelli's personal armorial bearings rendered in fine relief. The circular legend SEDE·VACANTE·MCMXXXIX arcs along the upper periphery, denoting the sede vacante period of 1939. A ribbon bearing the motto OPVS IVSTITIA PAX appears in the lower field, attributed to the engraver Aurelio Mistruzzi. |

In the lower portion of the field, a two-line inscription reads STATO·DELLA·CITTA / DEL·VATICANO, followed by the denomination L·5 in the exergue area, engraved by Aurelio Mistruzzi. |
