| 表面の説明 | The obverse is engraved in a fine guilloche ground of cross-hatched latticework. A central vignette presents two allegorical female and male figures — Mercury at left and Venice personified at right — flanking a decorative urn atop a cartouche with a cherub below; the date 1848 appears at centre. To the left, an oval escutcheon bears the arms of Venice with the winged lion, while to the right an ornate blank oval serves as the serial number panel. The curved legend MONETA DEL COMUNE DI VENEZIA arches across the upper field, with the denomination numeral 5 at upper left and the inscription CINQUE LIRE CORRENTI at upper right; a circular red administrative handstamp is applied over the central text. |

The 1848 Venetian uprising against Austrian rule produced an extraordinary monetary improvisation. When the Republic of Venice was proclaimed in March under Daniele Manin, the new government had no functioning central bank and no time to establish one. The Comune di Venezia issued emergency paper money directly — a municipal authority acting as a bank of issue purely out of revolutionary necessity.
The handstamp authentication reflects the chaotic conditions of the siege period. Austrian forces blockaded the lagoon city from mid-1848 until August 1849, and notes from this series circulated under genuine wartime duress. Many did not survive the Austrian reoccupation.
