Obverse description The obverse is engraved in a fine guilloche ground of cross-hatched latticework. A central vignette presents two allegorical female and male figures — Mercury at left and Venice personified at right — flanking a decorative urn atop a cartouche with a cherub below; the date 1848 appears at centre. To the left, an oval escutcheon bears the arms of Venice with the winged lion, while to the right an ornate blank oval serves as the serial number panel. The curved legend MONETA DEL COMUNE DI VENEZIA arches across the upper field, with the denomination numeral 5 at upper left and the inscription CINQUE LIRE CORRENTI at upper right; a circular red administrative handstamp is applied over the central text.
