Paul VI was elected in June 1963, just weeks after the death of John XXIII, inheriting both the papacy and the Second Vatican Council mid-session. This series was struck across the three years during which Vatican II continued its work, concluding in December 1965 — the most significant reform council the Church had convened since Trent in the sixteenth century.
