| Beschrijving keerzijde | The denomination 5 LIRE is displayed in two lines at the centre of the field, enclosed within a finely rendered oak wreath tied at the base. The circular legend ALLEANZA DEI POPOLI LIBERI surrounds the wreath, with two small five-pointed stars flanking the date 1848 in the exergue below the wreath. The overall design is simple and heraldic, emphasising the revolutionary motto of the alliance of free peoples. |

This 5 Lire belongs to the brief, doomed coinage of the Venetian provisional government that seized power in March 1848 following the expulsion of the Austrian garrison. Daniele Manin proclaimed the restored Republic of San Marco and the mint resumed operations under Italian control for the first and last time in its modern history. Austrian forces blockaded the city from the summer of 1848 and the siege tightened through 1849, cutting off supplies and eventually forcing surrender in August of that year — by which point cholera had killed far more defenders than Habsburg artillery.
The entire issue spans barely sixteen months of independent production.
