Reverse description The reverse centres on an intaglio portrait vignette of Ord. Prof. Dr. Aydın Sayılı (1913–1993), the eminent Turkish historian of science, positioned to the right. Surrounding design elements illustrate his scholarly legacy: a schematic diagram of the solar system, an atomic orbital model, a stylised rendering of ancient cave art, and a left-handed Z-DNA double-helix motif, all rendered in purple and violet tones over a fine guilloche background. The bank name and denomination inscription appear in letterpress at the upper margin.

Comments

The 5 Lira denomination has had a difficult life in Turkish circulation — chronic inflation meant that by the time this series was introduced, the note was already near-useless for everyday transactions, and public preference shifted almost entirely to coins and electronic payments. The Central Bank's own printing facility in Ankara has produced Turkish banknotes since 1955, one of relatively few countries where the issuing authority prints in-house rather than contracting abroad.

P#222B is the later signature variety within this emission, distinguished from P#222A by the governor and deputy governor signatures on the face.
