The 2005 Universiade was held in İzmir — the first time Turkey hosted the Summer World University Games. Organizing rights had been contested, with İzmir's bid ultimately beating out Kazan, which would go on to host the event in 2013.
Turkey issued commemorative bimetallic 5 Lira coins for several sporting events during this period, a deliberate push by the Turkish State Mint to expand collector revenue as the newly redenominated Yeni Türk Lirası stabilized following the catastrophic inflation of the 1990s and early 2000s, when the old lira had shed six zeros.
