Hranilnica Ljubljanske Pokrajine was the savings institution of the Italian-administered Province of Ljubljana, established after the Italian occupation of the region in 1941. This note dates from 1944 — after the Italian armistice of September 1943 — meaning it was issued under German occupation, though the institution retained its earlier bilingual Slovenian-Italian identity on the paper itself. That administrative continuity across two occupation regimes is the most telling thing about it.
Janez Trpin, a Slovenian graphic artist, designed the series locally. Wartime provincial scrip designed and produced within the occupied territory rather than imported from a metropolitan printer is uncommon for this period in Europe.
