| Description du revers | The national coat of arms of Lesotho dominates the central field, depicting a Basotho warrior seated cross-legged at the centre of a shield, flanked by two rearing horses serving as supporters. Crossed assegais and a knobkerrie appear behind the shield, with a crocodile rendered in the lower portion of the arms. A scroll below the shield bears the national motto KHOTSO PULA NALA in raised lettering. Below the arms, the denomination 5 LICENTE is inscribed in bold characters, flanked by five-pointed star stops, with the date 1966 and the fineness notation 900/1000 appearing in the lower field; a mint mark appears to the left of the date. Lesotho became independent on October 4, 1966, having spent nearly a century as Basutoland under British protection — a status the kingdom's rulers had actually sought in 1868 as a buffer against Boer and Cape Colony encroachment. Moshoeshoe II, the issuing authority here, was a constitutional monarch from independence and would spend much of his reign in political conflict with Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan, who suspended the constitution entirely in 1970 after losing an election.
This piece is part of the first coinage ever struck for an independent Lesotho state. The .900 silver composition was abandoned quickly in subsequent series.
