Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games in 1896 partly through sheer force of personal lobbying — the IOC he founded that year was initially little more than a handful of acquaintances he'd recruited at a Paris congress. Bulgaria's connection to that first modern Olympiad is thin, but the 2002 issuance falls squarely within a wave of commemorative gold fractionals produced by post-communist central banks testing collector markets in the early 2000s. KM#263 is a quarter-ducat-sized piece, its 1.24 g format borrowed directly from older European fractional gold traditions.
