Additional information

Issued to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Paisiy Hilendarski, the 18th-century monk whose manuscript history of the Bulgarian people — written in 1762 at the Hilendar monastery on Mount Athos — is widely credited with igniting the Bulgarian National Revival movement. The communist government of Todor Zhivkov leaned heavily on such historical figures to construct a usable nationalist narrative, funding commemorative issues that dressed Marxist cultural policy in medieval Bulgarian clothing.

The coin was struck at the Sofia Mint in a limited commemorative run, not intended for general circulation.
