| Obverse description | The state coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria is depicted centrally in the field, featuring a rampant lion within a shield, flanked by two wheat sheaves tied with a ribbon bearing the foundational dates 681 and 1944, and surmounted by a five-pointed star. The circular legend НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ runs along the upper periphery. Below the arms, the denomination inscription ПЕТ ЛЕВА appears above the large numeral 5, which is flanked by decorative foliate ornaments at the base. |

Issued to mark the centenary of the Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia, founded in 1878 shortly after Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule. The library was established in the same year the new Bulgarian state itself came into being — its founding was essentially an act of national institution-building rather than a cultural afterthought.
The .500 fineness reflects Bulgaria's standard for commemorative silver during the late communist period, when hard currency conservation kept fine silver out of domestic coin programs.
