Part of a Bulgarian National Bank commemorative series tied to the 2004 Athens Olympics buildup, this miniature gold issue was produced in extremely limited numbers — Bulgaria's small-format Olympic gold pieces from this period rarely exceeded a few thousand strikes. The Athens games held particular resonance for Bulgaria, whose Olympic cycling program had accumulated medals across multiple disciplines since the Soviet-bloc era.
