Obverse description Bare-headed portrait of King George I facing left, rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style by engraver Désiré-Albert Barre, whose name appears incuse below the truncation. The circular Greek legend ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α! ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ (George I King of the Greeks) surrounds the effigy along the upper and lower periphery, interrupted at the base by the date 1869 flanked by decorative rosette stops. The coin is bordered by a continuous toothed or beaded rim.
