These were among the first coins struck for the newly independent Greek state, issued under Ioannis Kapodistrias, who governed as the first head of state after centuries of Ottoman rule. Production took place at the Aegina mint — itself a deliberate political choice, as Aegina had served as the temporary capital and the mint's establishment was meant to signal the permanence of the new republic. The mint operated for only a few years before Athens became the capital and coinage policy shifted under the Bavarian regency following Kapodistrias's assassination in 1831.
